One Month to Go: Getting Ready for Danube Day 2026
With just one month to go until Danube Day 2026, preparations are well underway across the Danube River Basin. On 29 June, countries, communities, schools, institutions and organizations throughout the region will come together to celebrate the Danube and the shared responsibility to protect it.
Under this year’s motto, “United by Danube!”, Danube Day 2026 will once again highlight the river as a vital lifeline connecting people, cultures and ecosystems across borders. From educational activities and public events to river clean-ups, exhibitions, workshops, boat tours and panel discussions, a wide range of activities will take place across the basin in the coming weeks.
This year’s programme reflects the diversity and richness of the Danube River Basin. Events will invite participants of all ages to explore the importance of healthy rivers, biodiversity, sustainable water management and transboundary cooperation. Many activities will place a special focus on children and young people, encouraging the next generation to discover the Danube and become active guardians of its future.
Among the events taking place this year, Serbia will mark Danube Day with several activities, including the panel discussion “15 Years of the EU Strategy for the Danube Region – Achievements and Perspectives”, organized by the Mission of the Republic of Serbia to the EU and the Office of the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina. Held in Brussels on 29 June 2026, the event will bring together representatives from Serbia, the European Commission, the EU Strategy for the Danube Region and the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina to reflect on the Strategy’s achievements and future perspectives. Speakers are expected to include H.E. Mr. Danijel Apostolović, Ambassador and Head of the Mission of the Republic of Serbia to the EU; Mr. Moray Gilland, Head of the Unit for Macro-regions, Transnational, Interregional, External Cooperation and Enlargement at DG REGIO, European Commission; as well as representatives of the Bulgarian EUSDR Presidency and the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina.
For members of the wider Danube River Basin family living or working in Brussels, this event also offers a special opportunity to celebrate Danube Day at the heart of Europe’s institutional landscape, bringing the spirit of the Danube to Brussels and reaffirming the river’s role as a bridge between countries, communities, and institutions. Danube Day is more than a celebration. It is a reminder that the Danube connects 14 countries and millions of people and that protecting it requires cooperation across borders. As the countdown begins, the ICPDR warmly invites everyone to explore the programme, take part in local activities, and celebrate the river that unites us.
