News & Media

The International Commission for the Protection of the Danube River (ICPDR) is set to launch a webinar series aimed at fostering dialogue and collaboration between the water management and agricultural sectors. The initiative, titled "It Takes Two to Tango", seeks to address the growing challenges of water scarcity, pollution, and climate change that threaten both water resources and food security in the Danube River Basin.

Kick-Off Webinar: Good Practice Examples on Cooperation

The first webinar, scheduled for 28 April 2026, will focus on good practice examples of cooperation between agriculture and water management. The event will bring together experts, policymakers, and stakeholders from across the Danube region to discuss shared challenges, innovative solutions, and opportunities for sustainable collaboration.

"Climate change and increasing water demand are putting immense pressure on our rivers and agricultural systems," said Ms. B. Vogel, ICPDR Executive Secretary. "By working together, we can find solutions that ensure both healthy ecosystems and sustainable food production. This webinar series is a crucial step in strengthening that cooperation."

Key Topics and Speakers

The kick-off webinar will feature high-level speakers from the European Commission, FAO, and national authorities, including:

  • Ms. S. Marjani Zadeh (FAO Land & Water Officer) on the needs and challenges of the agricultural sector.
  • Mr. S. Kirkagaslis (EC DG AGRI Policy Officer) on EU policy perspectives for sustainable agriculture.
  • Mr. R. Müller (StMUV, Germany), Mr. K. Lichtenwöhrer (UWD, Austria), and Mr. M. Constantinescu & Ms. L. Todorova (MEWF, Romania) presenting national good practice examples of water-agriculture cooperation.

An interactive session will allow participants to share their perspectives and help shape future dialogue activities.

A Stepwise Approach to Strengthen Cooperation

The webinar series is part of a broader initiative to enhance collaboration between the two sectors. Following the kick-off, the ICPDR plans to organize:

  • National roundtables in selected Danube countries to engage local stakeholders.
  • International workshops for basin-wide knowledge exchange.

"Our goal is to create a platform where water and agriculture experts can jointly identify and promote sustainable solutions," added Mr. Franz Überwimmer, ICPDR NTG Chair. "By sharing experiences and best practices, we can ensure that our rivers and farmlands thrive together."
