The ICPDR supports the active involment of stakeholders and civil society an all levels of its work. Two of the most important plans to the ICPDR are the DANUBE River Basin Managment Plan and the Flood Risk Managment Plan, aiming to implement the legal requirements of WFD and FD, comprising strategic guiding plans for water management over the course of six years. Both are to be developed with a range of public consultation measures.

One of the primary advantages provided by the ICPDR is its capacity to assist national decision-makers in effectively balancing the competing needs and various uses of the Danube River. These encompass areas such as hydropower generation, agriculture, and climate risk management. The ICPDR functions as a comprehensive platform for member countries, facilitating consultation, coordination, and the holistic management of the Danube River Basin.

In accordance with Article 4 of the EU Floods Directive (FD), the first milestone in the FD basin-wide implementation is undertaking a preliminary flood risk assessment (PFRA), as well as identifying those areas for which it has been concluded that potential significant flood risks exist or might be considered likely to occur, so-called Areas of Potential Significant Flood Risk (APSFR), as in accordance with FD Article 5.

The Flood Protection Expert Group (FP EG) deals with ICPDR activities concerning sustainable flood risk management and the development and implementation of the Danube River Basin Flood Risk Management Plan.

In October 2007, a "Joint Statement on Inland Navigation and Environmental Sustainability in the Danube River Basin" was concluded, followed by a series of annual meetings. Here, we present reports, minutes and background materials of these meetings.

The overall objective of the Danube FLOODRISK project was to develop and produce high quality, stakeholder oriented flood hazard and flood risk maps for the transnational Danube river floodplains to provide adequate risk information for spatial planning and economic development activities.

Following a request by the Danube Ministerial Conference 2010, the ICPDR has become active in initiating a dialogue with representatives from the hydropower sector. As an essential step in this process, "Guiding Principles on Sustainable Hydropower Development in the Danube Basin" have been developed by an interdisciplinary team and were finalised and adopted in June 2013.
