VIENNA, 14th December 2022 – After almost 3 years of online activities due to the COVID-19 pandemic, 2022 saw the return of many in person outreach activities including the Danube Art Master competition. Each year the children and teens of the Danube River Basin are given the opportunity to reflect on the health of their local rivers, and to decide how they wish to help preserve these waters for the future. All eligible young artists are encouraged to use material captured, inspired, or borrowed directly from the environment itself in the creation of their artworks, and to look at their local surroundings as a key source of inspiration in the process.

This year, over 1300 children from 180 schools across the Danube River Basin came together to create over 400 works of art in celebration of the Danube River! The Danube Art Master winners are selected by a jury comprised of ICPDR members of the ICPDR's Public Participation Expert Group. The international winners of the 2022 Danube Art Master competition were honored during an award ceremony at the 25th Ordinary Meeting in Vienna on December 14th.

Susanne Brandstetter, Chairperson of the ICPDR's Public Participation Expert Group said when awarding the winning prizes: "the younger generation are the present and the future keepers of our Danube! We too can learn from them and how they look at this precious resource, that is water, with fresh eyes every single year".
