Within the boundaries of the Danube River Basin, several distinct ecoregions have been defined, based on the different geographical distributions of fauna and flora depending on the natural characteristics of the environment.

With a total area of over 800,000 km², the Danube River Basin covers 10% of Continental Europe. While the main river flows through ten countries, the full basin including its tributaries covers nine more. It is a unique artery through the heart of Europe, connecting East to West, and Black Forest to Black Sea.

Inventories and databases are fundamental requisites to assess the human influences to the environment. The ICPDR has been empowered by the Danube countries to organise data collection and to process the received information to serve the decision making processes.
