Long Night of Research 2026 – Dive into Science at the Vienna International Centre

Around 2,900 visitors came to the Vienna International Centre that evening, and many stopped by the ICPDR stand to explore the Danube’s hidden stories. Throughout the event, we opened a window into the river’s hidden world—from tiny organisms visible under the microscope to the tools used to monitor water quality and overall river health.

Visitors explored live samples, engaged in hands-on activities, and tested their knowledge in the Danube Quiz. The interactive experience sparked great questions and plenty of “aha” moments, making the evening both educational and inspiring. Approximately 200 enthusiastic participants took part in the quiz, with five winners selected in a raffle to receive ICPDR goodies. For those who would like to continue exploring, the Danube Quiz is available for download below.

At the stand, visitors could also meet ICPDR experts and world-renowned scientists who introduced macrozoobenthos under the microscope and shared insights into their role in assessing water quality, highlighting the importance of women in science.

A big thank you to everyone who stopped by, asked questions, and explored the Danube with us. Events like this show how science and public engagement go hand in hand and why sharing knowledge is key to protecting our rivers.
