Danube Day 2026: Save the date for a basin-wide celebration
On 29 June 2026, countries across the Danube River Basin will once again come together to celebrate Danube Day, an annual tradition launched by the International Commission for the Protection of the Danube River (ICPDR) in 2004.
Celebrated along the entire course of the Danube, this special day highlights the river as a vital lifeline connecting people, cultures, and ecosystems across borders.
This year’s motto, “United by Danube”, echoes the spirit of connection also reflected in the Eurovision Song Contest theme “United by Music”, underlining how shared values and a shared river can bring people together across countries and cultures.
Established to mark the signing of the Danube River Basin Protection Convention in 1994, Danube Day also carries strong institutional significance. Over the years, it has developed into a key platform for cooperation among 14 countries, reinforcing the shared responsibility of the basin’s 79 million inhabitants to protect the Danube as a vital natural and cultural asset. Through targeted activities and outreach, the initiative promotes the environmental stewardship needed to sustain the river’s essential role in Europe’s natural infrastructure.
A wide range of events will take place throughout the basin, with a particular focus on engaging children and young people. Through hands-on activities, educational programmes, and creative initiatives, giving everyone the opportunity to explore rivers, floodplains, and aquatic ecosystems and to better understand their role in protecting them.
From local celebrations to national initiatives, Danube Day offers a platform for citizens, schools, organizations, and institutions to connect and take part in a shared effort to contribute to the ICPDR's mission towards a cleaner, healthier, and safer Danube, one of Europe’s most important river systems.
