The 2013 Update of the Danube Basin Analysis provides a characterisation of the river basin district, a review of the environmental impact of human activity and an economic analysis of water use. This was first accomplished for the Danube River Basin in 2004 and is now updated. The updated assessment provides the analytical basis and is a preparatory step towards the elaboration of the Danube River Basin Management Plan - Update 2015.

The ICPDR supports the active involvement of stakeholders and civil society on all levels of its work. The most important work plans of the ICPDR are the Danube River Basin Management Plan and the Flood Risk Management Plan. Both were developed with a range of public consultation measures.

The River Basin Management Expert Group (RBM EG) provides guidance and coordination to ICPDR activities related to the implementation of the EU Water Framework Directive (WFD) in the Danube River Basin.

Sturgeons are sensitive to environmental pressures and therefore valuable indicators for healthy rivers. This is why the ICPDR has endorsed sturgeons as flagship species. There are six species of sturgeons native in the Danube River Basin, but the survival of these ancient fish is threatened by a range of issues. Through the "Danube Sturgeon Task Force", the ICPDR contributes to actions such as the protection of habitats, the development of migration aids, the breeding of healthy stocks in sheltered facilities, or the struggle against illegal fishing and caviar trade.

The countries of the ICPDR provide interim overviews on Significant Water Management Issues in the Danube River Basin District for national River Basin Management Plans which are currently developed until 2015. Bucharest, 28 Oct 2013. The "Sturgeon 2020", a strategy and program for the protection and rehabilitation of the Danube sturgeons, was published by the Danube Sturgeon Task Force.
