Flood Hazard Risk Maps

According to Floods Directive, the Member States shall, at the level of the river basin district or unit of management, prepare flood hazard maps and flood risk maps at the most appropriate scale for the areas identified under Article 5(1).

The preparation of flood hazard maps and flood risk maps for areas identified under Article 5, which are shared with other Member States, shall be subject to prior exchange of information between the Member States concerned. The ICPDR flood hazard and flood risk maps were prepared for the catchments with an area larger than 4000 km2 to ensure a coherent approach to river basin management planning. These maps show the potential adverse consequences associated with different flood scenarios and serve as an effective tool for information and a valuable basis for priority setting and further technical, financial, and political decisions regarding flood risk management.
