With more than 800,000 square kilometres or 10 percent of Continental Europe, the Danube River Basin extends into the territories of 19 countries. It is considered the most international river basin in the World. Those 14 countries that have more than 2000 square kilometres of the basin are, together with the European Union, contracting parties of the ICPDR. Here, you can learn more about the countries of the Danube River Basin, but also about various sub-basins and related regions outside of it.
From source to mouth, the Danube passes 10 countries, 4 capitals and draws water from 19 nation states. This makes the Danube River Basin the most international one in the World. No wonder that Napoleon referred to the Danube as the “Queen of Europe’s River”.
